Art Scale 1:48 Nakajima J1N1-Sa one-sided express mask is a single-sided set of masking templates for the clear parts. It is not a kit but an accessory for spraying the framing of the glazing cleanly. Intended for the Tamiya kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
A set of pre-cut self-adhesive masks for the clear parts of a model of the Japanese twin-engine Nakajima J1N1-Sa aircraft in 1:48 scale from Art Scale. It is not a model or decals but an aid for a build. The single-sided designation means that the set deals with the outer side of the glazing, that is, the side that is visible on the finished model. The modeler can mask the frames from inside as well, or leave them in the color of the clear part. On the J1N1 masking pays off especially, because the cockpit is long and divided into many small panes, where trimming strips of tape by hand takes more time than the whole rest of the build. The masks are cut to the outline of the Tamiya kit; on a kit from another manufacturer the shape of the panes differs.
The Nakajima J1N1 was a Japanese twin-engine aircraft of the Second World War period, originally designed as a long-range escort fighter. It did not prove itself in that role and the type was redesignated as a reconnaissance machine, later converted into a night fighter known as the Gekko. It was powered by a pair of Nakajima Sakae radial engines and the crew of two sat under long glazing. The night fighter versions carried obliquely upward-firing 20 mm cannons housed in the fuselage behind the cockpit, which was the technically most striking feature of the type. The designation J1N1-Sa belongs to the later night fighter machines with a modified armament fit.
Degrease the glazing before applying the masks and let it dry. Lift the parts off the sheet with the tip of a scalpel or with tweezers and seat them from one edge so that no air is trapped under the mask. Go over the edges with a wooden toothpick. On a long cockpit, spray in thin coats and preferably in several passes, otherwise a visible step forms at the edges of the sprayed area. The recommended procedure is the interior color of the framing first, then the base coat and finally the camouflage. Take the masks off shortly after the paint has dried, pulling at an acute angle, and wipe adhesive residue away with lukewarm water.
It is a supplementary set of masks, not a kit. The basic Tamiya kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
