An injection-molded plastic kit of the American experimental Nemeth Parasol aircraft in 1:48 scale from the maker Avis. It is an entirely new short-run mold of an unusual real subject — an aircraft with an almost circular wing carried above the fuselage. The package offers a decal sheet and clear glazing. For lovers of aviation curiosities it is a rewarding and unmistakable model for a collection.
The Nemeth Parasol was an experimental machine that came about in the first half of the 1930s on the grounds of an American university. Its most striking feature was a circular wing of large diameter, carried above the fuselage in parasol fashion. The designer was thus pursuing a very short takeoff and landing and an exceptionally low stall speed — with the engine out the machine was meant to descend slowly, as if the wing worked as a parachute. Only a single example was built, yet the idea of a circular wing inspired further experimental projects.
Short-run molds call for more preparation — count on cleaning the parts up, dry fitting and filling if needed. The key is a firm and square seating of the struts carrying the circular wing; try them dry first and let them dry properly. Finish the open cockpit before the fuselage is joined. Glue the plastic with thin modeling cement, apply camouflage or a color finish with an airbrush and lay the decals onto a gloss coat.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
