A decal set from the Czech brand Eduard with technical markings for a model of the twin-engine Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter in 1:48 scale. The word stencils denotes the small service and warning labels that were printed all over the surface of the real aircraft, and therefore not national insignia or the personal markings of individual machines. The package holds no kit. The extent of the sheet and the placement of the individual markings are described in the enclosed instructions.
The decals supplied with a kit tend to be reduced or printed too coarsely where technical markings are concerned, so once applied they look like blurred smudges. A separate sheet offers the markings in legible form and in a more complete range, which gives a model both scale and credibility. The effect is especially noticeable on the large smooth surfaces of the wing and the tail booms.
The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was a twin-engine fighter with a pair of tail booms and a central nacelle for the pilot and the armament. It was used for fighter work, escort and reconnaissance and was built in several versions that differed in equipment and in engine power. The placement of the technical markings can differ between versions, so go by the instructions and by period documentation.
Technical markings are applied only onto a gloss varnish, otherwise a matte edge of the carrier film will remain under them. Work on small areas at a time, release the decal in lukewarm water, carry it over with a brush and settle it with a softener so that it draws down into the engraved lines and rivets. Blot the excess water away with a cotton swab without pressure. Once dry, spray the whole model with a matte or semi-gloss varnish according to the finish you want. With a large number of small markings it pays to work in stages and to cut the sheet up in advance.
This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model in its own right. The base kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
