About product

Eduard 1:48 — P-40N, radiators upgrade set (PRINT)

This is not a kit but a detail set from Eduard in 1:48 scale that replaces plastic parts in the model. According to the manufacturer it contains the oil and coolant radiators and the radiator flaps for the P-40N and is designated for the P-40N kit from Eduard. The parts are made by direct 3D printing in resin; the set contains neither photo-etch nor decals.

Why the radiators in particular

The big chin under the nose is the recognition mark of the whole P-40 family — it is the most prominent element of the airplane's silhouette and the viewer's eye ends up on it before it reaches the cockpit. In plastic this part tends to be a compromise: the grilles and louvers are thick-walled, often blanked off, so the radiator intake looks like a solid piece of material. 3D printing allows thin, fine and open louvers and flaps and suggests the depth of the space behind them. What is more, on the real machine the flaps were set according to the flight regime, so you can show them partly open as well.

The P-40N versus the other versions

The P-40N was a late, lightened variant and differs in details from earlier machines such as the P-40E. The set is designated precisely for the P-40N; it need not be interchangeable with a model of another P-40 version, and the manufacturer offers separate sets for other versions. Before you order it, make sure which version of the P-40 you are actually building.

Tips for working with resin

Resin is not bonded by cement for polystyrene — you need cyanoacrylate or epoxy, which gives more time to seat the part. First wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water so that they are rid of mold release residue; otherwise the paint will not hold on smooth resin. Sand and clean up wet only: resin dust is harmful to health and must not be inhaled. Spray the screens and louvers in a thin coat — a heavy coat of paint will clog the fine openings at once.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the P-40N in 1:48 who want a faithful nose
  • Modelers bothered by thick-walled and impassable plastic grilles
  • Those who want to show the radiator flaps partly open
  • More experienced modelers used to resin and cyanoacrylate

A detail set, not a model. It is supplied unpainted; glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. These are replacement parts for the radiators. The P-40N kit in 1:48 scale you have to own yourself.

The manufacturer designates the set for the P-40N kit from Eduard. The P-40N is a late lightened version and differs in details from the P-40E, so do not assume interchangeability — separate sets exist for other versions. Check compatibility with a kit from another manufacturer beforehand.

According to the manufacturer the oil and coolant radiators and the radiator flaps, made by direct 3D printing in resin. Photo-etch, decals and masks are not included.

Glue them with cyanoacrylate or epoxy, not with cement for polystyrene. Before painting, wash them in soapy water because of the mold release agent. Sand wet and do not inhale the dust.
