The teardrop canopy changed the silhouette of the Thunderbolt

From the D-25 batch the spine of the fuselage behind the pilot was cut down and a frameless teardrop cockpit, inspired by British practice, was set in its place. The view to the rear improved so much that American squadrons in Europe quickly moved the older form to training. The price was a loss of directional stability, which the factory later made up with an extended dorsal fin ahead of the fin.

The film covers the glazing from outside, two masks for the fuselage insignia are added and eight turned weapons for the wings. The masks follow the parts of the Tamiya kit.

How much work it takes off your shoulders

Try to count how much time making eight barrels out of plastic swallows. On each one the tip has to be trued into a perpendicular plane, a hollow just under four tenths of a millimeter has to be drilled into the center of a one-millimeter cylinder and then the whole part cleaned up. Your hand shakes at it, the drill runs off the axis and some of the pieces end up cracked. With eight finished metal parts this item is struck off the list of work altogether, two hours are easily saved and above all the repetition of the same operation is avoided, which reliably takes the pleasure out of a build.

What is left to the builder

Measuring out the holes and drilling them into the leading edge. The muzzles do not sit in one row; every pair is offset, so it pays to take the spacing from the instructions and transfer it onto a strip of paper. The metal parts are fitted as the very last step, that is after spraying, clear coating and removing the film from the glazing, because any paint in the muzzle of a weapon takes away exactly the sharpness the set is bought for.
