A set of precisely die-cut self-adhesive painting masks from the Czech maker Eduard for a model of the American Republic P-47M Thunderbolt fighter in 1:48 scale. It is neither a kit nor a model: it is an accessory that makes painting the cockpit glazing and other small areas cleanly much easier. The masks are stuck straight onto the parts, so the framing of the bubble canopy gets crisp, straight edges without laborious cutting of adhesive tape. Sets of this kind also tend to include circular masks for the wheel discs, which make separating the tire from the rim easier.
The Republic P-47M Thunderbolt was the fastest production version of the massive American fighter. It came about in the closing stages of the Second World War with a more powerful engine, so that it could catch German V-1 flying bombs and fast jet machines. Like the other late Thunderbolts it had a bubble canopy with a good view, whose framing is rewarding precisely for masking.
Lift the mask carefully off the backing with tweezers or the tip of a knife and lay it on a dry, degreased surface. Press the edges down carefully, so that paint cannot run underneath. Apply the paint in thin coats, ideally with an airbrush, and pull the mask off before the coat hardens completely. On strongly curved shapes it helps to seal the edge with masking fluid.
This is a set of painting masks, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
