Die-cut stencils for a 1:48 model of the P-51B Mustang. They cover the busy cockpit glazing from both faces of the frames and contain two sets for the national insignia.
Responsibility details are not available.
Anyone who pictures a Mustang usually sees the late teardrop canopy. The P-51B looks different: the decking behind the pilot runs all the way to the tail and the glazing is divided by a dense grid of bars, to which a side panel hinging outwards is added. A version with a domed one-piece hood also existed, but the original, busy one is more laborious on a model and at the same time more characteristic.
Where the greatest saving is. On counting strips. Every bar wants its own piece, they are all of different widths and they must not differ by so much as a tenth of a millimeter, otherwise the asymmetry hits you in the eye when seen from above. A die-cut set does away with that arithmetic entirely.
Who it is for. For a modeler moving from the late version to the early one who unexpectedly finds that the cockpit alone swallows more time than the rest of the build. And for anyone doing machines from the summer of 1944 with broad stripes across the fuselage and wings: the stripes were sprayed over finished insignia and through a stencil that can be repeated faithfully, whereas with a decal hidden under a stripe it does not work out.
Contents. The glazing is covered from both faces and there are two insignia sets, so the insignia can get both a light fill and a dark surround.
A technical note. Work from the top down and press every piece with a wooden point along the whole length of the edge. A fingerprint leaves a greasy film on the film and that tends to be the most common reason why paint creeps under the edge. Work in a thin glove, then, or take the pieces exclusively with tweezers.
