A masking set with decals for the American P-51B Mustang fighter in 1:48 scale. The shapes cover the canopy frames from the outside and the inside plus the national insignia.
Responsibility details are not available.
The original P-51 with the Allison engine flew fast, but only low. Only when a Merlin built under license by Packard went into the airframe did the aircraft turn into an escort fighter of a kind that had not existed until then. The B version had a four-blade propeller, the carburetor intake moved under the nose and enough fuel to escort bomber formations deep over Germany. The cockpit stayed framed, with a raised fuselage spine behind the pilot, which restricted the view to the rear a good deal.
It is precisely that framed cockpit that makes this machine a rewarding candidate for stencils. There are many frames, they are narrow and they run in several directions. By hand they take a long time to draw out and any inaccuracy is immediately visible against the light through the clear parts. The package deals with both sides of the glass and the insignia, and decals come in addition.
The American markings went through several forms during the war and the B version caught them in the middle. The white star in a circle was given side bars and shortly afterwards a red border as well. A stencil makes it possible to spray each of those forms with a sharp edge, which on a multi-color insignia saves a great deal of handwork.
