Replacement exhaust stacks for the P-51B/C in 1:48 scale, for modelers who want a crisply cast detail on the sides of the fuselage instead of the basic part.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is an accessory for a build, not an aircraft model. The set contains replacement exhausts for a model of the Mustang in the B or C version in 1:48 scale. On the Mustang the exhaust stacks are visible on both sides of the fuselage right behind the engine cowling, and their shape strongly affects the impression the whole front end makes. A replacement part with hollowed openings looks noticeably better than a solid casting with blanked-off ends.
The B and C versions were the first Mustangs with the Merlin V12 engine from Packard license production. The engine took the exhaust gases out through six stacks on each side of the fuselage, and the hot gases left pronounced streaks on the skin behind them, which are among the typical marks of a machine in service. It was the Merlin engine that gave the Mustang its performance at high altitude and made it an escort fighter able to keep up with bomber formations all the way.
Wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent and let them dry, so that the surface accepts a primer. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw and level the mating surfaces by wet sanding with respiratory protection. Resin parts are glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Dry-fit the exhausts before closing the fuselage up and check the angle of the stacks. For painting, a dark metallic base complemented by rust and brown shades works well; apply the exhaust streaks over the upper surface of the wing with very thin, heavily diluted coats.
