Masking set for the North American P-51D Mustang in 1:48 scale. It covers the teardrop canopy from both faces, contains two sets of insignia masks and decals.
Responsibility details are not available.
The frameless teardrop canopy gave the pilot of the D version a view that the previous form with glazing recessed into the spine could not offer. After the fuselage spine was lowered, a transitional dorsal fairing ahead of the vertical tail was added as well, because without it the machine lost part of its directional stability. The British engine built under license in the United States raised the performance at altitude so much that an originally low-level machine became an escort fighter able to stay with a bomber formation for the whole route. Six large-caliber barrels in the wing could then do damage even in a very short burst.
For much of its service this machine was polished to bare metal, and that kind of surface is the most treacherous of all for masking. A metallic film is soft, holds on the base more weakly than ordinary covering paint, and a strong adhesive layer pulls a piece of the surface away with it when torn off. Reduce the tack therefore by pressing the film onto clean cloth before applying it, keep the mask lifted off its backing as little as possible and pull it away slowly, close to the surface rather than straight up. It also pays to lay a coat of clear gloss under the national marking, which protects the metal and at the same time keeps the edge from soaking into the texture of the polished surface.
