This set of photo-etched parts from Eduard in 1:48 scale focuses on the wingtip stabilizing floats of the PBY-5A Catalina. It is not an aircraft model but an accessory for a finished plastic kit. The etched parts allow a more faithful rendition of the structure and the mechanism of the retractable floats, which on the real aircraft folded up in flight and formed the wingtips.
The Consolidated PBY Catalina is an American amphibious flying boat of the Second World War period, famous for its long range, its patrol and rescue service and its hunt for submarines. The PBY-5A version was the amphibian with retractable landing gear. Its wingtip floats folded upward in flight, which improved the aerodynamics, and swung down for stability when landing on water.
Separate the fine etched parts with a sharp knife, make the bends over a bending tool and fix the joints with cyanoacrylate. Hold the smaller parts with tweezers. Since the real parts moved, pay attention to seating the parts exactly so the floats read cleanly and in scale.
This is a supplementary photo-etched set, not a kit. The aircraft model itself, glue and paints are not included in the package.
