A 1:48 masking set for the deep red finish of the Polish two-seat F-16D prepared for the 2013 tiger meet.
Responsibility details are not available.
Tiger meets have been held since 1961 by squadrons that have a big cat in their badge. For a few weeks they gather at one base, fly joint missions and, above all, bring machines with exceptional repaints, thanks to which the NATO Tiger Meet is one of the most photographed military events of the year. The 2013 edition brought among them a Polish two-seat F-16D in a full-surface red rendition.
The two-seat version has a longer tandem canopy and part of its equipment moved into an enlarged fairing behind the cockpit, so a repaint looks different on it than on the single-seat machines. The saturated area covers the fuselage as well as the vertical tail and breaks sharply on the edges of the air intake, where the light breaks too.
A single bold color over a large area is the most demanding task of all for a printed decal: the film has a different sheen from the surrounding varnish, it shows through at the joins between individual pieces and it cannot be pushed over riveting without wrinkling. When the same area is sprayed through a mask, the result merges with the surface and takes both flattening and the later accentuation of the joints.
The sheets for 1:48 scale are cut to finished outlines and also carry shapes for framing the cockpit. Before work it is worth testing the tack of the film on a spare molding, because freshly sprayed varnish holds differently from cured varnish. The symmetry of the two halves of the airframe is watched by the machine cut, not by the modeler's eye. The kit is bought separately.
