This is a photo-etched set from the Czech maker Eduard for a plastic model of the Lockheed PV-1 Ventura aircraft in 1:48 scale. According to the name it is aimed at the bomb bay, that is the space under the fuselage where the aircraft carried its load. An injection-molded kit usually handles that space in a simplified way, because it is made up of thin stiffeners, ribs and lines that cannot be produced in plastic. Photo-etched metal can express them in a realistic thickness.
An open bomb bay is among the effects a model gains most from. It can also be used compositionally: a model built with the doors open shows the inside and looks livelier at once than a smoothly closed fuselage. The set is prepared for exactly this kind of build.
The Lockheed PV-1 Ventura was an American twin-engine patrol and bomber aircraft derived from a civil Lockheed design and powered by Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engines. It flew chiefly on patrol and anti-submarine duties and on attacks against ground and naval targets.
Plan the build ahead, because the bomb bay is fitted before the fuselage is closed. Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel or photo-etch shears on a hard surface and make the bends over a straight edge, best in a bending tool. They are bonded with super glue or epoxy. Degrease the photo-etched parts before painting and lay on a primer; in the interior space a wash and fine shading then bring out the structure of the ribs so that it is visible even through the open doors.
The set is an accessory for a plastic kit, not a stand-alone model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
