Cut self-adhesive masks for the glazing of a model of the American twin-engined aircraft in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit but an aid for painting. The single-sided form masks the outer surface, unlike the double-sided variant of the same type, which covers the inner one as well. The set is cut for the Academy kit.
With an aircraft that has a large area of glazing it pays to keep to a firm procedure. First finish and paint the interior and seat the transparent parts. Then stick the masks on and run a toothpick along their edges, so that they sit down everywhere. Next comes a thin coat of the base color or of primer, which seals the edge of the mask: it is precisely that coat which decides whether the camouflage shade creeps under the mask. Only then spray the camouflage itself, again in several thin coats.
Before you take the masks off, look at the model against the light: an unevenness of the edge tends to be visible as a thin colored line on the glass. Small instances of paint creeping under can be repaired after the masks have been removed with a stick or a toothpick dipped in water, or carefully scraped away with the point of a scalpel while the paint is fresh. Remove the masks as soon as the paint has flashed off, not after several days.
