The hundredth anniversary of SPA 160 in 2018 on the single-seat Rafale C with the code 4-GJ. A printed sheet 1:48, a limited series of three hundred pieces.
Responsibility details are not available.
The French Air Force keeps its traditions through the escadrilles of the First World War. A squadron of today may be young, but the badge it carries on the fuselage may be a century old. That is exactly what this is about: SPA 160 came about in 1918, and so in 2018 the hundredth anniversary arrived. Its emblem with a devilish figure is one of the most conspicuous among French badges and the designers of the anniversary finish made use of that.
The carrier became a Rafale C with the code 4-GJ from the transformation escadron 3/4 Aquitaine. This formation is in charge of converting crews onto the Rafale, so its aircraft see more pilots in a year than the machines of combat squadrons. Anniversary artwork on such an aircraft gets shown outside the home base as well, because transformation machines travel often.
The year 2018 was exceptionally rich in celebrations of this kind. Escadrilles with three-figure numbers came about one after another in the last year of the First World War, and so a hundred years later the French formations were taking turns: during a single season several festively treated airframes appeared.
The real subject is the single-seat Rafale C, that is the version with the short cabin canopy. The print run of the sheet amounts to three hundred pieces, which is the usual size of a limited series with this brand.
Large motifs across the fin are best laid in two steps: settle the upper edge first and only then press the water downward. Any bubbles that remain can be pricked with a needle once dry and brushed over with thinned varnish.
