This injection-molded plastic kit in 1:48 scale captures the single-seat F-5E Tiger II in ROCAF markings, that is of the Republic of China Air Force on Taiwan. This release is built around the fighter-bomber role, which is matched by contents aimed at armament for strikes on ground targets. AFV Club is among the manufacturers that take care over fine engraved surface detail, a well-worked pilot's cabin and the option of opening the canopy.
The F-5E Tiger II is a single-seat light supersonic aircraft powered by a pair of General Electric J85 turbojet engines. It arose as a development branch of the F-5 line with more powerful engines, a modified wing leading edge and a better radar. It was precisely the combination of low purchase and operating costs that made it one of the most widespread aircraft in its category. Taiwan was among its largest users and the machines were also built there under license. Alongside the fighter role, the F-5E was also used for attacks on ground targets, that is exactly in the configuration this edition aims at. The two-seat variant of the same family is the F-5F; this kit, though, is the single-seat E.
First finish and paint the cabin, and only then join the fuselage halves. With a slender airframe it pays to try the parts dry and to fill and sand the joints on the spine and under the fuselage carefully, because they are clearly visible. Mask the landing gear bays and legs before you start spraying. An airbrush and thinned paints in thin coats suit the camouflage transitions; apply a gloss varnish under the decals and once they are dry unify the surface with a matte or semi-gloss varnish. Assemble and paint the stores separately and fit them at the end.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
