About product

Royal Navy Sea Harrier FRS.1 1:48 (Tamiya)

An injection-molded plastic model of the British carrier-borne vertical and short takeoff aircraft Sea Harrier (the FRS.1 version) in 1:48 scale from the brand Tamiya. The kit captures the characteristic look of the machine with its bulged cockpit canopy and four rotating vectored-thrust nozzles. It offers cleanly engraved surface detail and a well-worked cockpit; it contains decals for Royal Navy schemes including machines from the Falklands War.

The real subject

The Sea Harrier was a British carrier-borne fighter and reconnaissance aircraft with vertical and short takeoff and landing (V/STOL), derived from the land-based Harrier. It took off from the small aircraft carriers of the Royal Navy, often with the help of a bow ski-jump ramp. It became famous above all in the Falklands War in 1982, where in the fighter role it proved its high combat value. For vertical flight it used four rotating nozzles that directed the thrust of the engine.

Building and painting tips

Assemble and paint the cockpit and the landing gear bays before you close the fuselage. Glue the plastic parts with thin modeling cement for plastic; fill and sand the joints around the air intakes. Apply primer before painting and spray the colors with an airbrush in thin coats. The model looks striking with the nozzles turned to the vertical flight position and with the armament fitted. Fine-tune the gray naval schemes with light washes and highlighted panels.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers interested in British naval aviation and the Falklands War
  • Collectors of vertical takeoff (V/STOL) aircraft in 1:48 scale
  • Builders who will appreciate the precise fit of the parts

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
