The Lockheed S-3 Viking is a carrier aircraft of the US Navy originally intended for anti-submarine warfare. You can recognize it by its high-set wing, short stocky fuselage and the pair of engine nacelles under the wing. The crew cabin is glazed and sits high above the nose, so on a model it has a large area of glazing. A reconnaissance version nicknamed Shadow came about on the same airframe, and the set is intended for it as well.
The masks are cut from kabuki paper. That conforms well to curvature, holds even on the edge of a glazing frame and leaves no adhesive on the surface once peeled off. Compared with masking with tape it saves time above all: the shapes are already cut exactly to the parts of the kit, so measuring out and cutting small frames is done away with. The designation ADVANCED sets the extent of the set apart within a range that also offers the BASIC and EXPERT levels.
The masks are always stuck onto a clean, dry and degreased surface before spraying, not after it. Lift them off the sheet with tweezers and settle them exactly in place, then press the edges down firmly with a toothpick or a blunt tip, so that paint does not bleed under them. Spray in thin layers; a heavy layer creates a ridge at the edge of the mask that stays visible even once it is removed. Take the mask off soon after the paint has dried and pull it at an angle to the side, not perpendicularly upward. With clear parts work particularly carefully, so that they are not scratched.
A masking set is supplied. Paints, glue and thinner are not included in the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
