1:48 Savoia-Marchetti SM.79 bomb bay is a photo-etched set from Eduard for detailing the bomb bay of the Italian SM.79 bomber in 1:48 scale. It is not a model of the aircraft but an accessory for a kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set holds photo-etched parts for the bomb bay of the three-engine Savoia-Marchetti SM.79 bomber in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit of the aircraft, nor a part of it to be displayed on its own, but an accessory for a plastic kit of the same type and scale. Eduard is a Czech manufacturer and lists this item in its full photo-etched range, that is in a more extensive form than the smaller Zoom sets.
The space of a bomb bay tends to be simplified in injection molds. It lacks the ribbing, the hinges, the rods and the fine stiffeners that are clearly apparent on the real aircraft, and a plastic mold cannot render them in a matching thickness. Photo-etched metal sheet answers that problem: the parts have a true thickness of material and thanks to them an open bomb bay comes across believably even seen close up.
A sharp scalpel, tweezers and a photo-etch bending tool come in useful; small parts hold best on super glue applied in the smallest possible amount. Work in small assemblies and keep trying the fit in the fuselage, because once it is closed you can no longer get at the bomb bay. Before finishing, it pays to think over whether you want to leave the space open.
