An injection-molded plastic kit of the Italian three-engined bomber Savoia-Marchetti SM.79-II Sparviero in 1:48 scale from Trumpeter. The package holds parts in gray plastic, clear glazing and a decal sheet; the particular contents depend on the current release. The characteristic hump above the cockpit makes the model an instantly recognizable and unusual piece for the display cabinet.
The SM.79 Sparviero, meaning sparrowhawk, was one of the best known aircraft of the Regia Aeronautica in the Second World War. It was powered by three radial engines and, thanks to its design, proved itself as a medium bomber and as a torpedo bomber alike - in the torpedo role it gained a reputation as one of the most effective aircraft in the Mediterranean. Because of the prominent structure above the cockpit, the crews nicknamed it Gobbo, the hunchback. The SM.79-II version was fitted with more powerful engines and was the main combat variant.
Assemble and paint the cockpit and the interior first, because once the fuselage is closed there is no reaching them. Shade the three engine nacelles and the propellers separately and fit them only once they are finished. We recommend masking the cockpit glazing with tape or with masks. On a three-engined aircraft, take care over the symmetrical seating of all the engines and over clean joints. Mottled camouflage is typical of Italian aircraft - an airbrush is ideal, a wash brings the panel lines to life and a matte varnish evens the surface out.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
