About product

SE.5a Hispano Suiza 1:48 (Eduard)

A kit in 1:48 scale capturing the British Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5a fighter in the version with the Hispano-Suiza engine. Eduard is a Czech manufacturer from Obrnice near Most, and aircraft of the First World War are among its traditional subjects. Telling the power unit apart matters on this type: a sister version with the Wolseley Viper engine, which is a British-built derivative of the same design, also exists, and the two boxings differ precisely in the engine installation and the parts of the nose that go with it.

The real subject

The S.E.5a was one of the main British fighters of the close of the First World War. Instead of the rotary engines common at the time it received an inline water-cooled engine, which gave it a higher speed, a better rate of climb and above all calmer behavior — the aircraft was stable and made a steady gun platform, even though it was more reserved in agility than the rotary-engined fighters of the day. The armament consisted of a synchronized Vickers machine gun on the fuselage and a Lewis machine gun on the upper wing on a mounting that allowed firing obliquely upward and the changing of the magazine. Early production was accompanied by trouble with deliveries of Hispano-Suiza engines, which is why a version with the British Wolseley Viper engine came about as well. Structurally it is a biplane with a wooden framework, fabric covering and classic strut and wire bracing.

Building and painting tips

A biplane is built differently from a monoplane — the upper wing is the key. Never glue the strut assembly in one go: first seat the struts in the lower wing, let them cure completely and only then fit the upper wing, checking the angle and the symmetry against a template or a building aid as you go. Deal with the cockpit and the inside of the fuselage and paint them before closing up — on an aircraft with an open cockpit you can see well inside. Fabric surfaces look best when you do not overcoat them to a high gloss; under the decals, however, lay gloss varnish on, otherwise they will silver. It is advisable to add the bracing wires from thin thread or wire only at the very end, after the sheen has been taken off and the patina applied.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of aircraft of the First World War in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who want the version with the Hispano-Suiza engine, not the Wolseley Viper
  • Builders with experience of biplanes and of bracing wires
  • Anyone interested in the production of a Czech manufacturer

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The Wolseley Viper is a British-built derivative of the Hispano-Suiza engine. The boxings differ in the engine installation and the parts of the nose; they are two separate boxings.

Rather not. A biplane calls for accurate seating of the upper wing and patience with the bracing wires.

Check the contents of the package on the packaging. With aircraft from this period the bracing wires are usually added from the builder's own material.

Only at the end, after the sheen has been taken off and the patina applied. Any earlier and you risk tearing them off while handling the model.
