A detail set that replaces the cockpit of a plastic Sea Harrier FA.2 model with a resin casting. It is not an aircraft kit but an accessory for the modeler who finds the tub from the box not good enough. Casting in a one-piece mold allows what a split injection mold cannot manage: undercuts, fine engraving of the side walls, three-dimensional consoles and the relief of the instrument panel. The difference shows most on a model built with the canopy open.
The Sea Harrier FA.2 was created by upgrading the earlier FRS.1 version for the Fleet Air Arm. It received a new radar allowing the use of medium-range air-to-air missiles, a modified nose and reworked cockpit equipment. The powerplant remained an engine with vectoring nozzles, which gave the aircraft a short takeoff and a vertical landing from the deck of a carrier. The cockpit of the FA.2 differs from the FRS.1 precisely because of the change in instrumentation, which is why the sets for the two versions are made separately.
Expect that a resin cockpit will not go into the fuselage without modification. Wash the parts first in warm water with detergent because of the mold release agent. Cut the casting block off and level the surface on wet abrasive paper, with your airways protected. Then test the fit dry and patiently: usually the inner walls of the fuselage have to be thinned and the tub narrowed so that the fuselage halves close without a gap. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, and the gel type gives time to fine-tune the position. Spray the interior dark gray, bring out the edges with a dry brush and run a dark wash into the recesses. Before you close the fuselage, check the balance of the model toward the nose - resin in the cockpit will tend to add weight, which on an aircraft with a tandem landing gear arrangement is all to the good.
This is an accessory for a plastic kit, not a model in its own right. It is supplied unpainted; paints, glue and the kit are not included in the package.
