About product

Resin exhausts for the Spitfire Mk.I, 1:48 (Quickboost)

This is not a kit of an aircraft but replacement resin exhaust stubs for a model of the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I in 1:48 scale. Exhausts are among the parts that are very easy to see on a finished model, and yet in plastic they tend to be cast in simplified form, with the outlets blanked off. The resin replacement offers a crisper shape and more accurate spacing. The swap takes a few minutes and the effect is out of all proportion to the work put in, which is the typical benefit of the Quickboost accessory range from the Czech maker Aires.

The real subject

The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I was a British single-seat fighter that made its name in the Battle of Britain. It was powered by a Merlin V12, and it is precisely its exhaust stubs projecting from the sides of the engine cowling that are among the characteristic recognition features of the type. On early machines the design of the exhausts changed during production, which is worth checking against period photographs when building a particular aircraft. Pronounced smoke stains also formed around the exhausts in flight, and they are a rewarding subject for weathering.

Usage and painting tips

Wash the casting in warm water with a drop of detergent and cut the casting block off with a saw rather than snapping it. True the surface up on abrasive paper laid on a flat board, so that the exhausts sit in one line. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Painting tends to be more effective if the exhausts are glued on only after the camouflage has been sprayed. A dark metallic base works well, with thin layers of rusty and brown shades over it and finally a faint hint of light pigment. Spray the smoke stain behind the exhausts with heavily thinned paint in several light passes.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building early versions of the Spitfire in 1:48 scale
  • Those who want a quick and visible improvement to a model
  • Builders of competition models with well-worked weathering of the engine area
  • Beginners in working with resin, because the swap is simple

These are accessory parts, not a model of an aircraft. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. These are replacement exhaust stubs for an already purchased plastic model in 1:48 scale. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

Usually only after the camouflage has been sprayed. They are painted separately, and by gluing them on at the end you avoid the laborious masking of small parts.

A dark metallic base works well, with thin layers of rusty and brown shades over it and finally a light hint of pale pigment along the outlets.

Yes. All it takes is to cut the casting block off, true the surface up on abrasive paper and glue the part in with cyanoacrylate glue in place of the original plastic exhausts.
