Masks for the Spitfire Mk.Vb in 1:48 scale

A set of masks for a model of the British fighter Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vb in 1:48 scale. It is cut for the kit of the Tamiya brand, so the shapes of the pieces correspond to the glazing of that very kit and cutting tape by eye is done away with. This is an accessory to a kit, not a model of the aircraft.

Why use masks

A sharp boundary between the frame and the glass is the first thing that catches the eye on a finished model, and at the same time the thing that is hardest to manage freehand. A ready-made mask holds the shape of the frame for you, the result is the same every time and scraping dried paint off the glass is done away with. On the Spitfire that pays off doubly, because the canopy has a pronounced frame and a rounded shape, on which hand-cut tape is hard to steer.

How to work with the masks

• The masks are stuck on before spraying, never onto dried paint.
• The surface must be clean, degreased and dry.
• Peel the piece off the sheet with the tip of a scalpel or with tweezers, lay it on and press the edges down carefully.
• Spray in thin layers; a heavy layer will run under the edge of the mask.
• Take the mask off as soon as the paint has set, not once it has fully cured.
• Spray the frame with the shade of the cabin first, so that the color showing through does not mix.

The real subject

The Spitfire Mk.Vb was one of the most numerously built forms of this fighter and carried a wing with two 20 mm cannon and four machine guns. It served on most of the theaters the British took part in at that time.
