About product

The DFS 230 in 1:72 scale from RS Models

A plastic kit of the DFS 230 transport glider in 1:72 scale. RS Models works with short-run technology, which brings fine surface detail but at the same time heavier sprue gates and the need to keep test-fitting the parts dry and to true up the mating faces. We therefore recommend the model to those who already have several kits behind them.

The real subject

The DFS 230 was a simple high-wing machine with a welded steel-tube fuselage covered in fabric. It had no power of its own: it took off under tow behind a powered airplane, glided to its objective once released and touched down on a skid under the fuselage. The whole design was subordinated to carrying a small group of men and their load and to landing on a short, unprepared surface, which showed in the low weight as well as in the spartan fittings of the cabin. The type appeared in the second half of the 1930s and was used during the Second World War; modified versions gradually followed, differing in details of their equipment and braking devices.

Building and painting tips

Cut the parts off with a saw or a knife and true the faces with a file rather than nipping them. Glue with thin cement for plastic, which is drawn into the seam by capillary action and does not distort thin edges. The fabric covering shows to best effect under flat shades laid down with an airbrush over a uniform base coat; very light shading along the length brings out the ribs and stringers, but it must not turn into drawing. Mask the cabin glazing with tape and glue it with clear PVA glue or with cyanoacrylate glue intended for transparent parts, so that the surface does not fog. The tow gear and the struts are small — have tweezers and good light ready and glue them only once the paint has dried.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers with experience of short-run kits
  • Collectors of 1:72 aircraft of the Second World War period
  • Anyone interested in engineless and transport machines, which tend to be overlooked in model form
  • Builders of dioramas where the glider is the prominent centerpiece

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Rather not. Short-run models call for test-fitting the parts dry, truing up the mating faces and patience when gluing small pieces.

The subject is an engineless glider, so the model has neither an engine nor a propeller. The glider took off under tow behind a powered airplane.

The contents of the package, the number of parts and the extent of the decals are stated on the box.

Thin cement for plastic, which is drawn into the seam by capillary action. Use clear PVA glue on transparent parts so that the glazing does not fog.
