A set of die-cut masks for the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.VIII in 1:48 scale. It covers the cockpit glazing from both sides and is complemented by one national insignia mask and a decal sheet.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Mk.VIII was the version Supermarine originally saw as the standard for Merlin 60 series engines. It received a strengthened fuselage, a retractable tailwheel and balanced ailerons. Most of the machines went to the Mediterranean, to Burma and to Australian squadrons in the Pacific, so the Mk.VIII flew far from England and wore shades that differed from the home ones.
Behind the glazing the Spitfire hides one of the best documented cockpits of the Second World War. A tubular frame, a circular spade grip control column, a control panel on the right hand and above it a reflector gunsight whose glass plate stands right behind the windscreen. Anyone who has taken trouble over the interior then wants to see it, and that means having the canopy frames clean on both sides.
The reflector gunsight is aimed exactly through the windscreen, so seen from the front it lies on the same axis as the frame. If the frame is untreated on the inside, the eye slips over gray plastic and the gunsight is lost in it. An inner mask makes it possible to paint the frame in the interior shade, the gunsight separates from it and the cockpit gains depth.
The side door under the canopy deserves special attention. It was hinged, and in the open position it reveals the edge of the seat and the harness, so on a model with the door lowered the inner side of the frame comes literally to the foreground of the picture.
Two parts cover the glazing, one insignia for spraying and a decal sheet belong to them. The model is bought separately.
