An extended masking set for a model of the Lockheed SR-71A strategic reconnaissance aircraft in 1:48 scale. In the manufacturer's range the ADVANCED level stands above the basic BASIC set and covers a wider range of surfaces. The masks are cut from kabuki masking paper. It is not a kit but an accessory for painting a model; a detailed breakdown of the contents is given in the enclosed instructions.
The SR-71A was a two-seat reconnaissance aircraft capable of long flight at high supersonic speed at great altitudes. Given the thermal loads, the overwhelming majority of the structure was of titanium alloys, and power came from two Pratt and Whitney J58 engines with regulated intakes. The flowing transition from fuselage into wing, the long side chines and the canted tails give a model large smooth areas – all the more reason for it to stand out when the glazing frames and other sharp transitions are sprayed cleanly.
Work from the interior outwards: first spray the inner sides of the frames, then put the masks on, press the edges down and only after that spray the external shade. Thin layers matter more than with light camouflage, because dark paint picks out every step at an edge. Take the masks off shortly after drying, at a sharp angle. With a larger set it pays to label the parts according to the instructions before you lift them out of the sheet.
The package contains masks only. The model, paints and varnishes are not part of it, unless stated otherwise.
