Photo-etched cooling grilles in 1:48 for the model of the Steyr 1500 heavy cross-country car from the Czech maker Hauler. Cut-through metal sheet replaces a plastic surface with a merely suggested pattern.
Responsibility details are not available.
A small change to a model, but one that shows at first glance. The set of photo-etched grilles is cut for a specific Tamiya kit and replaces its plastic parts; the model itself is not included in the package. Injection-molded plastic has a technological limit of thickness, so grilles and louvers made from it tend to be molded as a solid surface with the pattern pressed into it. Photo-etched sheet, by contrast, really is cut through, and seen close up and in a photograph you can look through it, which on a vehicle with prominent cooling openings is an essential difference.
The Steyr 1500A was a heavy cross-country car of Austrian design, which the German army introduced from 1941. It was powered by an air-cooled eight-cylinder engine, a practical advantage over liquid-cooled engines in a dusty and freezing environment. The vehicle was produced as a staff car, as a flatbed and with special bodies, and the cooling openings on the hood and the sides are among its most conspicuous identifying features.
The main risk with grilles is not gluing but painting: thick paint applied with a brush floods the openings and the whole effect disappears. Spray several really thin coats, let them dry in between and check that you can see through against the light. It works well to paint the surface under the grille a dark shade before gluing it on, so that the background showing through looks deep. Degrease the part, apply a primer and glue with super glue around the edge, not in the middle of the area.
This is an accessory for a build. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
