About product

Voyager Model 1:48 StuG III Ausf. G, early configuration — photo-etched set

An aftermarket set of photo-etched brass in 1:48 scale for the Tamiya 32540 plastic kit. On its own it is not a kit and holds no plastic parts. It concentrates on the early configuration of the Ausf. G version, which differs from the later batches in details of the superstructure.

The real subject

The Sturmgeschütz III was a German tracked assault gun built on the chassis of the Pz.III tank. Instead of a rotating turret it had a low fixed casemate, thanks to which it had a small silhouette and was cheaper to produce, but it had limited traverse for the barrel. The Ausf. G version was the most numerous and carried the long-barreled 7.5 cm StuK 40 gun; the early and late examples of this version are told apart by the configuration of the commander's cupola, the gun shield and details of the superstructure.

Building and painting tips

With a full set the order of work decides it. Before you start gluing the plastic, go through the instructions for the photo-etched parts and mark all the parts that are fitted inside or beneath parts that the build closes up. Typically these are features of the engine compartment, the inner sides of the fenders and the surfaces beneath the superstructure. If you leave them out, you will not reach them later and the only solution is to take the model apart. A practical procedure is to build the model in subassemblies and add the photo-etched parts to each of them separately as you go, while they are still freely accessible. Painting can be done in parts too; the transitions are then unified by a light final overspray of the base shade.

Who the set is for

  • Experienced modelers who want to build a model with the maximum of detail
  • Builders making the early configuration of the Ausf. G version
  • Anyone interested in German armor in 1:48 scale

The set is an accessory for a plastic kit, which it does not include. The glue, paints and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. This is a photo-etched add-on set for the Tamiya 32540 plastic kit, which has to be obtained separately.

Go through the instructions before you start gluing the plastic. Some of the parts are fitted in places that get closed up during the build and would be inaccessible later.

The set is prepared for the early configuration. Late examples differ in the cupola, the gun shield and details of the superstructure, so some of the parts would not be correct.
