An injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet Sukhoi Su-11 interceptor in 1:48 scale from Trumpeter. The model has a faithful external outline, a finely scribed surface and richly broken-down main assemblies: the cockpit, the landing gear bays, the exhaust nozzle and the underwing armament. It is a well-shaped kit that modelers interested in Cold War jets will appreciate; finishing the cockpit with accessories helps toward a top result, but a presentable model comes out of the box as well.
The Su-11 was a development of the Su-9 fighter. It shared with it the delta wing, the swept horizontal tail surfaces, the cigar-shaped fuselage and the nose circular air intake with a regulating shock cone, but it received a longer nose to take a more powerful radar. The original beam-riding missiles were replaced by a pair of more powerful air-to-air missiles (NATO reporting name Anab), usually in a combination of semi-active radar and infrared versions. It was a high-speed interceptor intended to destroy enemy aircraft at the edges of airspace.
Paint and assemble the cockpit and the landing gear bays before you close the fuselage. Mask the canopy glazing and spray it together with the fuselage so that the frames match in color exactly; the cockpit can be displayed open. The flat, metallic-looking surfaces of Soviet fighters are handled with shades of aluminum and polished metal, or with the natural metal technique. Bring out the panel lines with a thin wash. Leave the underwing missiles and their pylons for last and set them apart in color from the airframe.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
