1:48 SU-152 fenders (Bronco)

Photo-etched fenders for the SU-152 self-propelled gun in 1:48 scale are an accessory for a plastic kit you have already bought, not a model. A metal replacement gives the fenders a real thickness and makes it possible to model bent or torn-off sheet as well.

About product

SU-152 - photo-etched fenders, 1:48 scale (Hauler)

Fenders are notoriously troublesome on models of tracked equipment: on the real vehicle they are thin sheet, in a kit a thick plastic molding, which moreover cannot be bent convincingly. The photo-etched replacement from the Czech maker Hauler resolves that contradiction - the metal has the right thickness and can be shaped. The set is fitted to the Bronco plastic kit; in itself it is neither a kit nor a finished model.

The real subject

The SU-152 was a Soviet heavy self-propelled gun introduced in 1943 on the chassis of the KV heavy tank. In a fixed superstructure it carried a 152 mm gun-howitzer and was used for shelling fortifications and for fighting armored targets. The fenders above the tracks protected the superstructure against mud and thrown-up material and carried tool boxes and spare parts. In field conditions they were the most heavily stressed part of the vehicle - they tended to be bent, knocked off or missing altogether.

Building and painting tips

Cut the plastic fenders away with a saw and level the area, so that the photo-etch sits down along its whole length. Offer the part up dry before gluing and check that it follows the outline of the hull. The greatest gain from photo-etch, though, lies in damage: the end of a fender can be bent upwards, nicked, or removed altogether, leaving only the brackets - which plastic does not allow. Glue with super glue section by section. Then paint the fenders together with the hull and give them more weathering than the rest of the model: mud, scratches and worn paint are in place here.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of Soviet heavy equipment in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who want to model bent or damaged fenders
  • More experienced builders used to cutting plastic parts away and replacing them with metal
  • Those after a markedly more realistic silhouette of the vehicle from the side

This is an accessory set for a kit you have already bought. It is supplied unpainted; the base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes. The original parts are cut away and the area leveled, so that the metal replacement sits down along its whole length.

Besides the right thickness, they make it possible to model damage. A bent or missing fender is a common sight on equipment in field service.

It is rather for a more experienced modeler. It calls for cutting into plastic, shaping metal and gluing with super glue section by section.

No, it is an accessory set. The base plastic kit has to be had separately.
