A set of pre-cut kabuki masks for a model of the two-seat Sukhoi Su-27UB in 1:48 scale, listed in the middle ADVANCED grade. It is not a model of an aircraft but an accessory to a kit. New Ware tells its sets apart as BASIC, ADVANCED and EXPERT — in extent ADVANCED stands between the basic and the most complete variant. The particular list of masks in the package is given in the enclosed instructions.
The two-seat Su-27UB has a long canopy with several frames and a series of rounded surfaces where cutting tape by hand does not pay off — asymmetrical frames are immediately visible on a finished model. Kabuki tape is a thin Japanese paper tape with a sensitive adhesive: it shapes well into curves, holds even on bulging glazing and once removed leaves no residue of adhesive.
Degrease the glazing and let it dry. Lift the masks out with tweezers, lay them on dry and press them down with a wooden stick into the corners too. First spray the frames with the shade of the cockpit interior, then with the overall camouflage. Take a mask off at a sharp angle while the paint is not fully cured. Keep the surplus of the sheet — it comes in useful for wheels, lights or small areas.
This is not a kit. The package contains only masking templates; the model, paints and glue are not part of it. The maker also makes further masking sets for the same aircraft in 1:48 scale, so before buying check that the set matches your kit.
