Su-30SM in 1:48 scale: double-sided masking of the glazing

This item serves for painting a model and in no way replaces a kit. Its double-sided version, apparent from the name, makes it possible to treat the glazing from both sides, so the frames look natural even when seen from above into an open cockpit. The outer and the inner pieces match the canopy of the Kitty Hawk kit.

The aircraft in brief

The Su-27 family gave rise to dozens of derived versions and the Su-30SM belongs among the most advanced of them. It is a two-seat multirole machine with a reduced turning radius, additional foreplanes and engines with thrust vectoring. Besides Russian units it serves with other users too and can be seen at air shows, where it demonstrates maneuvers in the low-speed range. Models of this type tend to be large and striking.

How to achieve a clean result

• First check the glazing against the light, so that you know about every scratch.
• Fit the inner templates before you assemble the fuselage together.
• Spray the paint on the frames in two or three passes, not all at once.
• Check the transition between the frame and the surface with a magnifier before taking them off.
• Finally you can gently accentuate the frames with a thin shadow shade.
• Leave the outer templates in place during varnishing too; they protect the glass.
