Markings for the Su-7 supersonic fighter-bombers of the Polish Air Force, which served from the mid-1960s until the end of the Cold War.
Responsibility details are not available.
A supersonic attack aircraft with a strongly swept wing and a circular air intake in the nose, it had one of the most distinctive silhouettes of the Cold War. It had enormous thrust, wretched range and a reputation as a machine that forgives only an experienced pilot.
Poland was one of the few foreign operators. The Su-7 entered service there in the mid-1960s and over the following two decades formed the backbone of the strike regiments, until more modern types took over. Alongside the single-seat attack versions, two-seat trainers with a lengthened cockpit served as well.
The aircraft wore the typical Eastern Bloc camouflage, the Polish checkerboard on the fin and large tactical numbers on the fuselage, whose style differed from regiment to regiment. It is exactly this small difference that makes the Su-7 a rewarding subject, because two models of the same type look different every time.
The sheet is drawn for 1:48 scale. So that the large areas of the checkerboards settle without wrinkling, it pays to lay them on a perfectly smooth gloss surface and to draw the excess water off with the edge of a paper towel. Do not touch the printed face with a finger, as the grease from your skin prevents adhesion. The set contains decals only.
The Su-7 stands slightly in the shadow of the better-known MiGs, even though it was once a front-line strike tool. That is precisely why it is rewarding: you rarely meet it at shows and the Polish coloring gives it a character the Soviet machines do not have. Anyone who builds Eastern Bloc equipment systematically fills with it the gap between the fighters and the later Su-22.
