Eduard 1:48 Supermarine Seafire F.XVII is a set of pre-cut masking stickers for the glazing of a model of the carrier-borne Seafire in 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard contains pre-cut self-adhesive masks for the glazing of a model of the Seafire F.XVII in 1:48 scale. The masks are popped out of the sheet, stuck onto the clear parts and, once the frames have been sprayed, taken off. The result is sharp, evenly wide frames of the canopy, which are reached by painting with a brush by hand only with great difficulty.
Why masks instead of a brush
The frames of the canopy are the most exposed area of the whole model. An uneven line or paint that has run under the frame spoils the impression of the entire piece of work and can be put right only with difficulty. The masks solve the problem by having the boundary of the paint decided by the shape of the cutout, not by a steady hand.
The Seafire is the naval form of the Spitfire adapted for operation from aircraft carriers. The F.XVII version follows on from the carrier-borne Mk.XV with the Griffon engine and was given a cut-down fuselage spine with a bubble canopy, strengthened landing gear with a longer stroke of the shock absorbers and further modifications for service at sea. It is precisely the bubble canopy that makes the cockpit a prominent part of the silhouette of the model.
Wash the clear parts first and let them dry thoroughly, so that the mask holds. Transfer the mask with tweezers or the tip of a scalpel and press it down with a soft wooden stick. Spray the paint in thin coats; a heavy coat will run under the edge. Take the mask off while the paint is freshly dry, not after several days, when there is a risk of the paint tearing away with it.
