A decal sheet from the manufacturer Xtradecal in 1:48 scale focused on early Spitfires of the Mk.I version, or rather the Mk.Ia, in their 1940 form. This is the first part of a two-part line; the second part is a separate product with its own content, so the sheets complement rather than duplicate one another. The sheet brings markings for a finished painted model; neither a kit nor paints are part of it.
The Spitfire Mk.I was the first production version of the type. It was powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin III engine, and the armament consisted of eight 7.7 mm machine guns in the wing. During 1940 the machines went through a series of small changes: two-blade fixed-pitch propellers were replaced by three-blade variable-pitch ones, armor was added and the canopy received bulged side glazing. The markings of the period combine matte upper camouflage, national roundels, the code letters of the unit and markings on the vertical tail. The subject is treated factually and technically.
The most common mistake is over-soaking the decal in the dish. In lukewarm water a few tens of seconds is usually enough; as soon as the film starts to shift on the backing, it is done. Longer soaking washes the adhesive out into the water and the decal then does not hold on the model and shifts or rolls up easily. Lift the decal out together with its backing before it releases on its own, let it rest for a moment on a piece of paper towel and only then slide it off the backing onto a wet place on the model.
