The set is not a kit but an accessory to a Spitfire Mk.V model in 1:48 scale. The SPACE line from the Czech maker Eduard of Obrnice near Most uses three-dimensional decals: the color print is laid on a layered carrier, so the resulting part has relief and color at the same time. An instrument panel is thereby turned from a flat plate into a raised surface with legible dials, without your having to reach for a brush with a hair-fine point.
Why it is not a classic wet decal
SPACE elements are not soaked whole in water and they have no adhesive layer of their own. Only the backing paper is moistened with a damp sponge and a drop of detergent, the part is lifted off it with tweezers and seated on the part in a drop of dispersion, that is white, glue. The manufacturer does not recommend cyanoacrylate glue, and a decal softener would damage the printed layer, so it is not used. For a modeler who avoids photo-etched parts because of the bending and gluing of tiny pieces, this is the quickest way to a detailed cockpit.
The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.V was a British single-seat fighter aircraft powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. It was a very widespread variant that came about in several wing forms and was used on a number of fronts. The cockpit is clearly visible on a model under an opening canopy, so a well-worked interior is not wasted effort; on the contrary, it is among the first things a viewer notices on a finished model.
Degrease the interior parts before gluing. Moisten the backing paper with a sponge, take the part with tweezers by its edge rather than by the print, and seat it exactly first time into a drop of dispersion glue. Finish the whole interior before you glue the fuselage halves together. Choose a dry approach to weathering, as the solvents in washes and a softener can damage the print. Better leave the canopy open, so that the work can be seen.
