About product

Eduard 1:48 Supermarine Spitfire Mk.V TFace masks

A set of pre-cut self-adhesive masks for the glazed surfaces of a Spitfire Mk.V model in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit but an add-on to one. The TFace version means that the sheet contains masks for both sides of the glazing, so the frames can be sprayed in the interior color from the inside as well. On a Spitfire with a sliding hood and a side cockpit door the inside is clearly visible, so that work pays off. The masks are made by the Czech firm Eduard of Obrnice near Most, die-cut from thin kabuki paper that yields to the curves of the canopy and leaves no adhesive on the clear part once removed.

The real subject

The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.V was the most numerous version of the early war years, powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. It was built in variants that differed in armament and in the shape of the wing tips, and in modifications for service in hot regions, where the machines received a conspicuous filter under the nose. It is precisely the wide range of versions and color schemes that makes the Spitfire Mk.V a popular model, and one on which a cleanly unmasked cockpit counts for a great deal.

Tips for applying and spraying

First wash and degrease the glazing. Apply the inner masks before you seat the canopy, spray the interior shade of the frames, and only then go on with the outer masks and the outer color. Lift the mask off the sheet with a scalpel, press it down and work the edges with a toothpick, above all on the curves of the canopy. Spray in several thin coats; one heavy coat will leave a step at the edge of the mask. Take the masks off soon after the paint has dried, pulling at an angle along the edge. Glue clear parts with super glue for canopies or with dispersion glue for glazing; ordinary cement for plastic will fog them.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of Spitfires in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who build with the canopy open and want clean frames on the inside
  • Those who do not want to cut masking tape by hand
  • Builders working with an airbrush and thin coats

The set contains masks only. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

They let you spray the frames of the glazing in the interior color. With the canopy open the inner side is visible and unpainted frames give away that the cockpit was not worked on.

No. It is a stand-alone set of masks.

Do not count on it. The masks are cut for a particular shape of glazing, and that differs from kit to kit.

Shortly after the paint has dried, pulling at an angle along the edge. The longer they stay on the model, the harder they come off.
