This is not a model of the aircraft but an accessory wheel set in 1:48 scale from the Armory company for Supermarine Spitfire kits. This variant represents a tire with a linear tread pattern and a hub with three spokes. It is exactly this pair of features that sets it apart from the other Spitfire wheel sets from the same manufacturer.
The linear pattern is made up of fine parallel grooves that injection-molded plastic in this scale usually only suggests, and the parting line breaks them up as well. A resin casting is one piece and the grooves stay legible even after the paint has been sprayed on. What shows most, though, is the weighted tire effect: the bottom of the tire is flattened the way the rubber sits under the weight of the aircraft, so the model rests on the ground with a flat contact patch.
The Supermarine Spitfire was a single-engine fighter with main landing gear retracting outward from the wing root; the wheel track was unusually narrow as a result, and the landing gear is one of the prominent recognition features of the type. Several types of hub and several tread patterns were used on it in the course of production, so choosing the right combination belongs to a particular machine and its period.
Wash the parts in warm soapy water and let them dry; the mold release agent would otherwise keep the paint off. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a knife, do not snap them, and level the surface with a file and abrasive paper. Sand wet or with respiratory protection. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Apply a primer, spray the tire dark gray and paint in the spokes of the hub with a brush; a fine dry brush can then emphasize the engraving of the tread pattern. Seat the wheel with the flat area pointing straight down.
The set is an accessory, not a kit of the aircraft. It is supplied unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
