About product

Armory 1:48 Spitfire wheels, a smooth tread pattern and covered hubs

This is not a model of the aircraft but an accessory wheel set in 1:48 scale from the Armory company for kits of the Supermarine Spitfire fighter. The set is cut for the variant with smooth tires with no pattern and with hubs closed by a full cover; it is exactly this combination that sets it apart from the other Spitfire wheel sets from the same manufacturer.

How they differ from the wheels in the box

A plastic wheel is typically split into two halves, so a seam runs across the tread and the hub alike, and it has to be sanded down and the shape restored afterwards. A resin casting is one piece and the smooth surface of the tire comes out with no extra work. The main benefit is the weighted tire effect: the bottom of the tire is cast flattened the way the rubber sits under the weight of the aircraft. On the Spitfire, with its narrow landing gear track, this is a detail that immediately changes the impression a model makes.

The real subject

The Supermarine Spitfire was a single-engine fighter with main landing gear retracting outward from the wing root and with a characteristically narrow wheel track. Several types of hub and several tread patterns alternated on it in the course of production; a smooth tire with a covered hub is among the forms that appear in a number of period photographs. Choosing the right combination therefore belongs to a particular machine and its period.

Building and painting tips

First wash the parts in warm soapy water: the mold release agent would keep the paint off. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a knife, never snap them, and level the mating surface with a file and abrasive paper. Sand wet or with a respirator, as resin dust should not be inhaled. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue), as cement for plastic does not hold on resin. Apply a primer before painting; a smooth tire with no engraving reveals every unevenness, so check the surface carefully. Seat the wheel with the flat area pointing straight down.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Spitfire in 1:48 who are building a particular machine with smooth tires
  • Modelers who object to the seam across the tread of a plastic wheel
  • Those who want a faithfully loaded landing gear on the model
  • Modelers with experience of resin and cyanoacrylate glue

The set is an accessory, not a kit of the aircraft. It is supplied unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a separate wheel set in resin with which you replace the plastic wheels supplied in the kit in 1:48 scale during the build.

A smooth tire with no tread pattern combined with a hub closed by a full cover. The other Spitfire wheel sets from the same manufacturer have a different pattern and a different type of hub.

They are glued with cyanoacrylate-based super glue. Before painting, the mold release agent is washed off the parts and they are sprayed with a primer; only then comes the paint.

It is an intentional weighted tire effect that imitates rubber compressed by the weight of the aircraft. On the Spitfire, with its narrow track, the effect is clearly apparent.
