The SUU-23/A underwing cannon pod in 1:48 scale. An accessory for models of American combat aircraft that carried a cannon in a pod.
Responsibility details are not available.
An accessory for builders of models of American jet fighters. The SUU-23/A pod was the answer to a situation where an aircraft had no built-in gun armament and it had to be added from outside. Inside the housing is a six-barrel 20 mm rotary cannon; its drive was provided by a ram-air turbine, so the pod needed no power from the aircraft.
It is best known for its association with the Phantom, which in its early versions lacked gun armament and had the pod hung under the fuselage. It can also be met on other US Air Force machines of that time. A characteristic feature is the movable cover on the front of the housing, which swings open before firing, so the model can be built in a variant with the front open or closed.
Check against photographs whether your subject carried the pod on the centerline pylon or under the wing, and adapt the pylon to that. Dry-fit the part and only then glue it, because a crooked stance shows a great deal on a long housing. Painting can be done separately; just take care that the shade of the housing matches the underside of the aircraft. It pays to darken the muzzles and add light sooting.
