A set of photo-etched parts in brass sheet in 1:48 scale from the manufacturer Hauler, intended for a model of the Soviet medium tank T-55. It is neither a model of the tank nor a part of one that could be built on its own. It is an add-on accessory that replaces those elements of an injection-molded kit that cannot be made thin enough in plastic. The set is cut for one specific kit, the Tamiya one, so check before you buy that it corresponds to the model you are building.
Plastic has its minimum thickness and its demands on the mold. The grilles over the engine, the fenders, the brackets for tools, the eyes, the clips and similar elements therefore come out of the box robust and the edges are rounded. Brass sheet, by contrast, is an order of magnitude thinner, and an etched relief holds a sharp outline, so once painted the detail behaves credibly even seen from close up. In the small 1:48 scale that difference shows even more than on larger tanks, because a plastic part there tends to be the coarsest in relation to the real thing.
Cut the parts from the fret with a sharp scalpel against a hard surface, not with scissors, which deform the sheet. Make the folds over the edge of a ruler or in a simple bending tool, always in one go and without folding repeatedly, so that the brass does not crack. They are glued with cyanoacrylate; on larger surfaces a two-part epoxy resin is safer, as it gives you time to line the part up. Degrease the brass before painting and spray a primer for metal, otherwise the top coat will not hold on the smooth sheet. It pays to paint bent grilles in a darker shade than the surfaces around them and to add a dust pigment, so that the recesses do not stay flat.
This is an accessory, not a kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
