A masking set for the glazing of the training version of the Douglas TA-3 Skywarrior carrier-based aircraft in 1:48 scale. Two sheets are enclosed: the first defines the cockpit frames from outside, the second closes the glazing from the other side. Cut from the mold of Trumpeter.
Responsibility details are not available.
Douglas designed the Skywarrior at a time when the US Navy wanted a carrier of the nuclear bomb able to take off from an aircraft carrier. The result was a giant with a swept wing and a pair of jet engines in nacelles beneath it, which earned a nickname among its crews derived from its weight and from how hard it was to work with. The designers went for a slim fuselage with a bomb bay, and the crew sat in a cockpit without ejection seats, which on a machine this big was a source of lasting worry. The basic bombing role lasted only briefly, but a whole series of specials was derived from the airframe: tankers, reconnaissance, jamming and training aircraft. The training variant served to train navigators and systems operators, and in this form the aircraft flew long after other types had taken over its original task.
The model of this aircraft is sizeable in 1:48, and its cockpit and side windows form relatively large areas. A large area means a greater risk that paint will get under the edge of masking tape, because film is harder to press down over a longer run. A machine-cut sheet seats evenly and holds the edge. The inner template then keeps traces from being left on the glazing while the interior is sprayed, traces that could not be removed once the model is assembled.
