The letter at the end of the TBF-1C designation does not mean a trifle. The original Avenger had a single light machine gun of 7.62 millimeters caliber at the front, mounted in the cowling and firing through the propeller disc, which was too little for such a large torpedo bomber even for suppressing fire. The version with this letter left it out and instead received a heavy Browning of 12.7 millimeters caliber in each wing. The firepower forward was roughly tripled by that.
The rest of the defense stayed unchanged and was unusually well worked out for its time: an electrically operated rotating turret on the spine with one heavy machine gun and another light weapon firing backwards and downwards from the ventral position, operated by the radio operator lying down. The package follows that new pair in the wings, because it is the one best visible from outside and it is the one that tells this version apart from the previous one.
The number of national insignia masks is remarkable. Four sets match the fact that this is a large three-seat machine with marking on the upper and the lower surface of both wings and on both sides of the fuselage. On a single-seat fighter of the same series there tend to be only two sets.
The glazing of the Avenger is extensive, divided and includes the glazing of the turret, so pre-cut films save a considerable amount of work. They cover the outer as well as the inner side, thanks to which the frame of the cockpit comes out the right color from both viewpoints.
The torpedo bomber was the largest machine on a carrier deck that could be fitted into a lift at all, and the size of the parts of the model matches that. Count on applying the films to the whole glazed area taking more time than on a single-seat type.
