This CMK detail set opens up the bays of the wing machine guns of the torpedo bomber Avenger in the TBF-3 and TBM-3 forms, in 1:48 scale. It is an accessory for a build that replaces a closed area of the wing with one fitted with a bay; you obtain the model of the aircraft separately.
The Avenger was the largest carrier torpedo bomber the US Navy entered in the Second World War. Besides a torpedo or bombs it carried heavy machine guns in the wing, which the armorers reached through hinged covers. It is exactly these openings with ammunition, belts and the supporting structure that are among the most rewarding details that can be shown on a model, because while standing on a deck they often stayed open.
An opening has to be cut into the wing: first mark the outline out, then work with a scriber and a fine saw, so that the material does not crack. Paint the inside of the bay before you close it up, and choose the shade according to period sources. Bring the guns and the mechanism out with a dark wash and a light metal highlight. You can glue the covers in the open position or prop them into a partly hinged state.
