About product

An instrument panel for the Hawker Tempest Mk.V in 1:48 scale from Yahu Models

This is a standalone modeling accessory, not a kit of the aircraft. Yahu Models supplies the instrument panels as a finished photo-etched part with the color printed on at the factory, so the laborious painting of the individual dials and needles falls away. The panel is cut for the cockpit of the Hawker Tempest Mk.V in 1:48 scale and replaces the plastic or decal instrument panel from the basic kit. The difference shows mainly on models with the canopy open, where the cockpit can be looked into.

The real subject

The Hawker Tempest Mk.V was a British single-seat fighter of the closing stage of the Second World War. It grew out of the Typhoon, but it was given a new wing with a thin laminar flow section and a revised, lengthened fuselage. It was powered by a liquid-cooled Napier Sabre engine, and the armament consisted of four 20 mm cannon in the wing. It entered service in 1944 and made its mark above all at low altitudes over western Europe and against the flying bombs. The cockpit had the typical British layout with a main instrument panel and a blind flying panel grouped in the middle.

Usage tips

Separate the panel from the fret with a sharp scalpel or photo-etch scissors and level the remains of the tabs with a fine file. It is bonded in spots with thin super glue or with a special glue for photo-etched parts; ordinary glue for plastic does not hold on metal. Before fitting it, check whether the original relief of the instruments has to be sanded off the plastic part so that the panel seats at the correct depth and the canopy will close. Do not spray over the printed dials with clear coats containing an aggressive solvent, as they could attack the printing. The instrument glass can be suggested with a drop of clear gloss resin or of a thicker gloss acrylic clear coat. Work with tweezers over a mat with a raised edge, as a tiny photo-etched part is easily lost.

Who the accessory is for

  • For modelers building the Tempest Mk.V in 1:48 scale with an open cockpit
  • For those who want faithful instruments without laborious hand-painting
  • As a quick improvement where a full interior set is not needed
  • For beginners with photo-etch, as a single part is fitted, not a complicated assembly

This is a standalone accessory for refining the cockpit. The basic kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. It is a standalone accessory for the cockpit, an instrument panel. The basic kit of the aircraft has to be obtained separately.

No. The panel has its color printed on at the factory, so it is only separated from the fret and fitted. At most the surrounding parts of the cockpit are painted.

With thin super glue applied in spots, or with a glue intended for photo-etched parts. Ordinary glue for plastic will not join metal.

Often yes: the original molded relief of the instruments is leveled with sandpaper so that the panel seats at the correct depth.
