About product

The seated pilot of a Tempest aircraft in 1:48 scale

A resin figure of a pilot in a seated position in 1:48 scale from the Czech manufacturer CMK. It is intended for the cockpit of a model of the British Tempest fighter, where it will fill the empty seat and give the finished model both scale and a story. An empty cockpit always looks a little lifeless on a completed model, and it is precisely one well painted figure that changes that more than a whole interior set. The figure is supplied unpainted and before being fitted it has to be cleaned, the casting block cleaned up and the figure painted.

The real subject

The Tempest was a British single-seat fighter from the late period of the Second World War, recognizable by its substantial fuselage, large vertical tail and thin laminar wing. The pilot sat relatively high under a bubble canopy, so a substantial part of the figure is visible on a finished model, including the shoulders, the helmet and the life vest. That is precisely why it pays to finish a figure well with this type, unlike aircraft where only the top of the helmet can be seen of the pilot.

Building and painting tips

First wash the figure in warm water with detergent, so that the remains of release agent disappear from the surface. Cut the casting block off with a fine saw, not with nippers, as resin cracks. Sanding should be done wet and with protection for the airways. Before gluing it into the cockpit, try the seating dry, as it may be necessary to sand the bottom of the figure down or to modify the seat. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Spray a primer, and only then paint; acrylics suit figures well. The procedure is simple: a base tone, a dark wash into the folds of the clothing and the straps and finally a dry brush on the edges. Give the greatest care to the face, because the eye of a viewer always goes to the face first.

Who the figure is for

  • for builders of British fighters in 1:48 scale
  • for modelers who want to bring the cockpit of a finished model to life
  • for dioramas and scenes on an apron

The figure is supplied unpainted as a casting in resin. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is supplied as an unpainted casting in resin. Before painting, wash it free of release agent, clean the casting block up and spray a primer.

With cyanoacrylate glue, that is, super glue. Ordinary cement for plastic does not hold on resin.

The figure is designed for the cockpit of this type in 1:48 scale. Try the seating dry first, as a small modification of the bottom of the figure or of the seat may be needed depending on the particular kit.

A base tone of skin, a thin darker wash into the eye sockets and under the nose, and a slightly lighter tone on the edges of the cheekbones and the chin with a dry brush. Work under good light and with a magnifier.
