About product

Hauler 1:48 Thoma Schürzen for the Pz.IV - photo-etched set

This photo-etched set from the Czech maker Hauler replaces the side armor skirts of the Pz.IV tank with their late variant made of dense wire mesh, which became known as Thoma Schürzen. The set is cut for the Tamiya kit in 1:48 scale and mounts on a finished hull. It is not a tank model but a metal accessory for a kit.

The real subject

The Schürzen side skirts appeared on German armor as protection of the sides against anti-tank rifles and shaped-charge rounds. Solid sheet plates, however, bent when driving across country, tore off their brackets and were often lost in the field. Late in the war they were therefore replaced by a solution made of dense wire mesh - it was lighter, suffered less damage and against hollow-charge rounds it did a comparable job. It is exactly this mesh variant that you can hardly make from plastic: in 1:48 scale only thin photo-etch, which you can see through, reproduces it faithfully.

Building and painting tips

Separate the parts from the fret with a sharp scalpel against a hard surface, never by twisting - the mesh is easily crushed. Degrease the brass photo-etch with alcohol before painting and cover it with a thin primer, or the paint will not hold on the smooth metal. Paint the mesh before fitting it and spray heavily thinned paint in several thin coats so that the openings do not fill in and the mesh stays see-through. Make the bends over a metal ruler or in a photo-etch bender; it is bonded with super glue. The model looks more convincing if you leave a few segments slightly buckled or missing altogether.

Who the set is for

  • For builders of the Pz.IV in 1:48 scale who want the late version with mesh skirts
  • For modelers bothered by the thickness of plastic parts compared with the real thing
  • For more experienced builders - photo-etch calls for a scalpel, tweezers and a steady hand
  • For diorama builders who want to damage the skirts or take them part way off

This is an accessory set, not a model in its own right. The Tamiya base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

Super glue. Polystyrene cement does not work on brass, because it does not bite into metal. On larger areas the slower gel version helps too, as it gives you time to set the part in place.

Paint it before fitting, with heavily thinned paint and in several thin coats, preferably with an airbrush. A thick coat clogs the openings of the mesh and the see-through effect is gone.

A photo-etch bender makes the job much easier, but you can manage straight bends over a metal ruler with a razor blade. What matters is bending in one movement; repeated bending fatigues the metal and the part cracks.

It is not. It is an accessory set that you fit to a Pz.IV kit in 1:48 scale. The kit itself is not included in the package.
