This set from the Czech manufacturer Brengun is not a model but a photo-etched detail accessory for 1:48 scale. It holds a set of small engineer and maintenance tools in thin brass sheet — an accessory that brings aircraft and ground dioramas, stowage boxes, mechanics' working corners or the sides of vehicles to life. Detail of this kind practically cannot be made from plastic as finely as from photo-etched metal.

Use

• Nip the individual pieces out of the fret and bend them to shape over the edge of a ruler if needed.
• Bond them with super glue (cyanoacrylate) to the intended place on the model or the scene.
• Pick the tools out with wood and metal colors, then with a wash to bring out the relief.
• Ideal for drawing attention in a diorama with figures.

Painting tips

Paint the tool handles in a wood shade, the metal parts in dark iron or steel, and unify the whole with a fine wash that brings out the relief. Suggest wear with light scuffs and a hint of rust on the edges. The small dimensions of the parts call for a thin brush and a steady hand, but the result gives the scene scale and life.
