1:48 Torpedo Mk.46 for helicopters, a pair is a resin accessory from Metallic Details. These are stores for models of carrier helicopters, not a kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set holds two light Mk.46 anti-submarine torpedoes in the form for helicopters, in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit of a helicopter or of any part of one. The torpedoes are hung on the side pylons of a machine that has already been built, or they can be used as a separate element of a deck scene. It is precisely the stores that tend to be the weakest point of helicopter kits, because an injection mold cannot keep thin tail fins sharp.
Carrier anti-submarine helicopters form the second layer of defense for a group of ships: they operate further from the hull of the mother ship, can hover over a contact and drop a torpedo from low altitude and low speed. That very way of dropping places different demands from a drop by a fast aircraft, and so the fittings of a torpedo for helicopter use differ in the arrangement of the tail section. The Mk.46 served in this role with a number of navies for a very long time.
Before doing anything, wash the castings in warm water with detergent, or neither primer nor paint will hold. File the casting block rather than breaking it, and watch the alignment of the body of the torpedo. On a helicopter a torpedo is very much on view, because it hangs low and close to the observer, so it pays to sand the surface carefully with a very fine abrasive and only then spray. Deal with the mounting after the fuselage has been varnished, as masking is easier then. A discreet wash into the joints and a light wiping of the edges are enough at the end, as overdone weathering on stores looks unconvincing.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and the base model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
